Why We Only Use European Linen

Why Souls in Clothes uses only European linen — the sustainable, durable, and beautiful fabric behind every garment we make.

Why We Only Use European Linen

Why European linen? Because where fabric begins matters.

Every Souls in Clothes garment starts with a single decision: the fabric. We chose European linen — specifically flax grown in Belgium, France, and the Netherlands — because no other fibre comes close to what linen offers in terms of durability, breathability, and beauty over time.

What makes European linen different from other fabrics?

European flax is grown in a cool, humid maritime climate that produces exceptionally long, fine fibres. These fibres are stronger than cotton, softer than most synthetics, and naturally antibacterial. Unlike cotton farming, flax requires minimal irrigation and no pesticides when grown in its native climate. The entire plant is used — nothing is wasted.

How does linen age compared to cotton or polyester?

While most fabrics degrade with washing, linen does the opposite. It softens with every wash, developing a lived-in drape that synthetic materials can never replicate. A well-cared-for linen garment can last decades. That's not marketing — it's textile science. The fibres actually become more supple as the pectin that binds them gradually loosens.

Is linen sustainable?

Linen is one of the most sustainable natural fibres available. Flax requires 88% less water than cotton. It grows in rotation with food crops, improving soil health rather than depleting it. Our mills in Belgium have been weaving linen for generations, using processes refined over centuries to minimise waste and energy consumption.

We could source cheaper fabric. Blended linens, cotton-linen mixes, or fabrics from regions with lower labour standards. But the difference shows — in the hand, in the drape, in how the garment feels after its hundredth wash. We chose European linen because it's honest fabric. And honest fabric makes honest clothes.

Every metre we use is traceable back to the field where the flax was pulled. That traceability isn't a luxury — it's a responsibility. When you wear Souls in Clothes, you wear something with a known origin. In a world of anonymous supply chains, that matters.
