Where Our Linen Comes From

The journey of our European linen — from Belgian flax fields to finished fabric, fully traceable and sustainably grown.

Where Our Linen Comes From

From Belgian flax fields to your wardrobe — the journey of our linen.

Our flax is grown in Northern Europe — Belgium, France, the Netherlands — where the cool, damp climate produces the longest, finest fibres. It's woven into fabric at mills that have been running for generations. We trace every metre back to the field.

Where is the best linen in the world grown?

The coastal regions of Belgium, Northern France, and the Netherlands produce what textile experts consider the finest linen in the world. The maritime climate — cool temperatures, consistent rainfall, long daylight hours — creates ideal conditions for flax. The resulting fibres are longer, finer, and stronger than flax grown in warmer or drier climates. This isn't a marketing distinction — it's measurable in fibre length, tensile strength, and fabric hand feel.

How is flax turned into linen fabric?

After harvest, flax stalks are left in the field to ret — a natural process where moisture and microorganisms break down the outer stalk, freeing the inner fibres. These fibres are then scutched (separated), hackled (combed), spun into yarn, and woven into fabric. The entire process from field to fabric takes months. Each step requires expertise that's been refined over generations. Our mill partner in Belgium has been weaving linen since 1952.

Is linen farming sustainable?

Flax is one of the most environmentally friendly crops grown in Europe. It requires no irrigation in its native climate, uses minimal pesticides, and improves soil health through crop rotation. Every part of the plant is used — fibres for textiles, seeds for linseed oil, shives for insulation. Zero waste from field to fabric. The carbon footprint of European linen is a fraction of cotton or any synthetic alternative.

When you know where your fabric comes from, you wear it differently. Not more carefully — more confidently.
